SOCIAL MARKETING :: GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN

Moms from a grassroots organization, the Parent to Parent Coalition felt the pain of not being able to get their children necessary addiction treatment which led them to launch a campaign called Just a Nickel a Gallon. Their objective was to raise awareness with both the public and policymakers that a small increase in the alcohol tax in New Jersey could raise $12 million for addiction treatment and save 3800 lives.

A branded look was created and incorporated into all the elements of the outreach campaign. Jugs to collect nickels, door hangers, labels, stationary and an advocacy toolkit were developed for a memorable, consistent approach to their short and long-term campaign objectives. The launch of the campaign was critical, as a new administration entered office, but there was wide media coverage around the newly elected Governor's budget issues. One article revealed that the Parent to Parent advocates were effective in getting the Governor to leave an appearance at Rowan University with a Just a Nickel a Gallon campaign jug. Months later advocates were also effective in gaining the attention of the legislators, and the media after the Governor added an alcohol tax allocation to his budget.

"The first thing to keep in mind, is that your objective is not to make a 'TV show' or a 'show' of any kind. You are collecting evidence; you are encouraging witness; you are emboldening ordinary people to 'go public.'"
